Front and entry doors only

Front and entry door replacement in Ottawa

HUSH replaces front and entry doors across Ottawa and Gatineau, in steel or fibreglass, with the frame, sill and weatherstrip fitted as one unit. If your door sticks in summer, lets a draft through in January, or the frame has gone soft at the bottom, that is what this is for.

What does a front door replacement actually involve?

In most cases we fit a pre-hung unit, which means the door, the frame, the sill and the weatherstrip arrive as one assembly and go in together. That is what gets you a door that seals, rather than a new slab hung in an old frame.

The alternative, a slab-only swap, works when the existing frame is genuinely square, sound and the right size. On an Ottawa house past about twenty years that is the exception rather than the rule, because the same freeze and thaw that ruins garage door trim works on an entry frame too, and it starts at the bottom of the jamb where you cannot see it. We check the frame with a probe before quoting, so the answer is decided by the wood and not by which job is easier to sell.

Steel or fibreglass: which entry door suits an Ottawa house?

Both are insulated and both handle the winter. Steel is the value option and the stronger face. Fibreglass costs more, cannot dent or rust, and is the only one of the two that looks convincingly like wood.

Fibreglass: no dents, no rust, real woodgrain look

The practical way to choose is exposure and traffic. A door under a deep covered porch, used twice a day, is fine in steel and the money is better spent on the glass or the hardware. A door in direct afternoon sun, or one that takes bikes, strollers and boots every day, is where fibreglass earns the difference, because a dent in steel is permanent and a scratch in fibreglass is not.

What affects the price of a new entry door?

Five things, roughly in order of impact: whether the frame is being replaced too, the material, how much glass is in the door, whether there are sidelights or a transom, and the hardware you choose.

Glass is the one people underestimate. A solid door, a half lite and a full decorative lite with leaded inserts are three quite different prices for what looks like the same door. Sidelights change the job more than the door does, because the opening is wider and the whole unit is bigger. And rot is the variable that moves a quote most, exactly as it does around a garage door, which is why we measure and probe before we price rather than after. We put the number in writing and you approve it before anything is ordered.

Can the front door and the garage door be matched?

Yes, and it is the reason a lot of Ottawa homeowners do both in the same year. The two biggest openings on the front of the house sit within a few metres of each other, so when their colours disagree the eye goes straight to it.

Matching is not just paint. Finish, hardware colour and the trim around each opening all read together from the street, which is why we quote the pair when someone asks. If you are already looking at a new garage door, say so when you call and we will price both openings on one visit. And if the wood around either one is tired, wrapping the trim in aluminium finishes both in the same colour and stops the rot that started this.

What do you not do?

Patio doors, sliding doors and french doors. We do front and entry doors, and we would rather tell you that now than take the booking and hand it to somebody else.

If that is what you need, a window and door specialist is the right call, and we will say so on the phone rather than sending a technician to look at something we do not fit. The same honesty applies to the frame question above: if your existing frame is genuinely sound, we will tell you a slab is enough, because a pre-hung unit you did not need is a worse outcome than a smaller invoice.
