Commercial garage doors in Ottawa and Gatineau
HUSH services and installs commercial garage doors across Ottawa and Gatineau. A commercial opening is judged on cycle life, duty cycle, headroom and backroom, not on looks. Tell us the door type, the opening size and what the door is doing, and we will book a site visit.

What counts as a commercial garage door?
A commercial garage door is one specified for a business rather than a house: heavier gauge steel, a spring or barrel rated for far more cycles, an operator with a real duty cycle, and often a code requirement sitting behind it.
The number that separates the two is cycle life. A residential torsion spring is commonly rated around 10,000 cycles, which is roughly seven to ten years of a family opening the door four times a day. Put that same spring on a shop bay that cycles forty times a day and it is finished inside a year. Commercial assemblies get specified in cycles because the door is production equipment, not a feature of the building.
The rest follows from that. Panels run in a heavier gauge, hinges and rollers are sized up, track is hung from steel rather than wood, and the operator is chosen by duty cycle instead of horsepower. Power matters too: plenty of commercial gear head and jackshaft operators are wired for three phase, which is a question to settle before anybody orders a motor.
Which commercial door type fits your building?
The opening decides it before preference does. Measure headroom above the opening, backroom behind it, and the side room on each jamb, then count how many times a day the door moves. Those four numbers rule most types in or out.
Sectional steel is the standard warehouse and shop door: insulated panels on horizontal track, an R value you can specify, and lites where the bay needs daylight. It wants headroom and backroom, so a low ceiling or a crowded truss space pushes you elsewhere. Rolling steel coils a slat curtain onto a barrel above the opening, which is why it survives where there is no room to run horizontal track at all.
Rolling shutters and security grilles are the same mechanism aimed at security rather than weather, so the slat, the locking and the guides are what you compare. High speed doors are bought on feet per second and cycle life, because the value sits in throughput and in the conditioned air you stop losing every time an opening stands open. Fire rated closures are not a preference at all: where the wall carries a rating the opening carries one too, it drops on a fusible link or a release, and it has to be drop tested on a schedule. Wind load is the other specification that can override taste, and it is set by the building rather than by the door.
What commercial door work does HUSH take on, and what falls outside it?
HUSH repairs, installs and maintains the door and everything that moves it: springs, cables, barrels, tracks, curtains, panels, hinges, rollers, seals, operators and their safety devices. Loading dock equipment is not door work, and neither is the electrical feed.
On the repair side that means broken springs and cables, a curtain that has come out of its guides, a single section swapped instead of a whole door, worn barrel bearings, barrel tension reset to spec, and operator faults that run from a failed limit switch to a UL325 entrapment protection device that will no longer let the door close. On the install side it means measuring the opening properly, confirming headroom, backroom and side room, checking wind load where the building demands it, and specifying the door and the operator together rather than one after the other.
What we do not take on is another trade's work. We do not run new three phase circuits or panels, we do not touch structural steel, and we do not service loading dock equipment, which is a different trade wearing the same coveralls. Omar is the owner operator and a factory trained technician, so the person who quotes your building is the person who works on it.
Who calls HUSH for commercial door work in Ottawa?
Property managers and condo boards with a resident garage that has to keep working, shop and warehouse owners whose bay is the front door of the business, general contractors closing in a building, and facility staff who hold the maintenance budget.
The common thread is that a stuck door costs money by the hour rather than costing convenience. A condo garage door that will not open puts residents on the street and the board on the phone that evening. A warehouse bay that is down stops shipping. A storefront shutter that will not lift means the store does not open that morning, and nothing else on the schedule matters until it does.
That changes what a quote has to contain. Commercial work usually needs a scope in writing that can be handed to a board or an owner, a plain statement of what is being replaced against what is being repaired, and a realistic answer on parts that have to be ordered rather than carried on the truck. Curtains, fire rated assemblies and three phase operators are order items, and saying so at quoting time is what keeps a schedule honest.
What happens after you call about a commercial door?
You reach a person, not a queue. We take the door type, the opening size and what the door is doing, then book a site visit. Commercial work is quoted in writing after we have measured, and you approve the price before we start.
The service call is $35 to $85, and it is free on any repair over $250. For a commercial installation, a curtain replacement, a high speed door or a maintenance contract there is no honest number to give over the phone, because the price turns on the opening, the headroom, the operator, the power available and how close a lift can get. That is what the site visit is for, and the written quote follows it.
Bring the door to the call if you can. The manufacturer plate, the door size, the spring or barrel details, the operator model, and whether the building is single or three phase will all shorten the visit. Photographs of the opening taken from inside help more than any description, because the headroom and the track are what we need to see. Our labour is covered by the 90 day Done-Right guarantee we put in writing, and manufacturer parts carry their own warranty on top of it.
Does HUSH carry insurance and WSIB coverage for work on commercial sites?
Yes. HUSH carries commercial general liability insurance and WSIB coverage, and both certificates go to you before work starts. Ontario does not licence the garage door trade, so those two documents are the check that means something on a commercial site.
Most commercial sites require both before a contractor is allowed through the door, and they are right to. If an uninsured technician is hurt in your building, the claim can end up against the building. A WSIB clearance certificate is free to validate on the WSIB eClearance service using the firm number, and a certificate of insurance names the insurer, the limit and the expiry date, so both are checkable rather than merely stated.
Ask for the same two documents from anyone else you are considering, and read the expiry date on each. If you want the longer version, we set out the certificate of insurance and WSIB clearance we hand over, including how to verify a contractor yourself in a few minutes.
